How To Dress Like A Parisienne

October 8, 2018

“Paris is always a good idea.”

– Audrey Hepburn

Paris is a dream for many of us from a young age; the Eiffel Tower, the croissants, walking along the Siene. As we grow older, there is something else we wouldn’t mind from Parisiennes either…their style. Paris remains the reigning fashion capital of the world, and the men and women who live there are shining examples of why. The French have an effortless chic that creates the sense of having just thrown something on and walked out the door looking fresh and natural yet still impossibly stylish.

I don’t know about you, but I do not wake up like that. For many of us, that effortless style does take some effort. If we break down the quintessential French everyday style, there are a few easy things you can do to replicate their simple cool.

  1. The Pant: Don’t underestimate the power of a good pair of jeans. Whether skinny or boyfriend style, this is a throw-on item and carries with it a simple feel (even though we often dress it up). Another option is a ponte knit pant (good stretch but not in the yoga pant kind of way) for casual days or a cigarette pant for a more upscale look.
  2. The Top: Think blouses and button ups here. Nothing too crisp or starched, though. These should be a softer fabric, such as silk, that moves with you. In terms of colors, you want to avoid loud prints or patterns. The French everyday style is known for strong basics that will last and be incorporated into many different outfits. Lightweight, oversized sweaters over skinny jeans or pencil skirts work every time, too.
  3. The Bag: Travel light. Unlike in the U.S. where larger purses are the staple, more often than not a French woman would be carrying a smaller bag (like the Chloe Drew bag in this week’s Spurge vs Steal) in cream, brown, black, red, etc. Nothing that has busy colors or patterns and nothing too heavy that weighs down the look.
  4. Footwear: Strong, simple heels or flats  that are well-made and comfortable. In keeping with the trend, footwear integrates easily into a number of outfit combinations as it is generally in solids or patterns that have neutral coloring.

Put it all together and voila!
