While on a call for work the other day, Drew was asked about his plans for the long weekend over the Fourth of July holiday. His response? “Changing diapers and making bottles.” Though we will be doing more than that as a family, that’s pretty much our lives at the moment, and we couldn’t be more happy. Our little family is enjoying soaking up time together at home this summer.
Beckham is the sweetest and happiest little man we ever could have imagined. He is also impressing the hell out of us with how he’s growing and changing so quickly! At 3 months now (wild!!), he is sleeping through the night, holding up his neck and turning it side to side, and giving us big smiles. He’s so close to being able to hold up his head/neck without a spotter, too! I am fortunate enough to have a great job that provides me with 18 weeks of maternity leave to spend with him and we are soaking it all up together. I never thought I would ever want to not work, but he really makes me wish I could stay home with him forever!
I never imagined I would be a mom to anyone except my pugs. Now that I am and have been for a few months, it still hits me odd every so often. Out of nowhere sometimes I just think “holy crap I have a kid”. Whether my brain wants to believe it or not, I get to call this little guy mine and I couldn’t be more happy about that. Adapting to life with Beckham has been trying at times, but overall, it has been extremely rewarding and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Sure, I have to sneak in peeing when he’s happy or asleep, but I also get the sweetest smiles thrown my way when I say ‘good morning’ to my little man. He stole our hearts!
The biggest thing for Drew and I has been to make sure we have some balance in our lives, though. Being a parent is not our sole identity. We are still our own people and a couple within our family unit. Spending time reading, watching a tv show, writing a blog post, etc.; we each find ways in which we can still have mental or creative outlets to be ourselves. If we aren’t taking care of ourselves, we can’t take care of each other!
So while we are changing diapers and making bottles, we are loving our family time more than words can really express.
