How To Steal Some Royal Style

The last few years have seen a huge surge in the popularity of the British royal family thanks to Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle joining the ranks. Both women have brought with them a fresh wave of style that has the entire world begging for more. Every event they attend means worldwide media coverage, a sellout look for whichever brand they have chosen to wear, and millions of women replicating or taking inspiration from their style.

There are any number of reasons to love Kate and Meghan’s style, but the one that draws me in most is the romanticism of vintage looks coming back to life. Seeing the two duchesses is like looking into the pages of Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar in the 1950’s but with a fresh feel. Take a look below at some ‘then and now’ comparisons if you don’t believe me:

There is nothing I love more than looking through vintage magazines or watching an old movie, so this reemergence of the idea that dressing with inspiration from one of the most glamorous design eras is music to my ears. The best part is that it is not that hard to follow Kate’s and Meghan’s lead! Here are some simple steps for how you can incorporate the royal style into your own looks:

  1. Solid colors with clean and simple lines. The fit is the real key here! The biggest win with this approach is the ability to mix and match each piece (a dress, skirt, top, coat, anything!) in multiple ways throughout your wardrobe.
  2. If you choose a print, it should be subtle and include 2 colors (3 at max). I think of the quote from Coco Chanel: “Dress shabbily, they remember the dress. Dress impeccably, they remember the woman.” However, I change it up some to “Dress in a loud print, they remember the dress….”.
  3. Accessories game on point. Both duchesses carry a simple clutch that never detracts from their outfit, only compliments it. The same goes for their footwear. Their heels are usually a matte finish (no patent leather) and at a height of around 3.5 inches to avoid fatiguing the muscles over a long day of activities.

For inspiration from the 1950’s (or your favorite decade of style), I love Pinterest! With more than 10,000+ pins, my Pinterest love speaks for itself. You can always follow me or check out my page for inspiration from the 50’s and more at Life Without Louboutins on Pinterest.

If you have seen looks here or anywhere from Kate and Meghan that you want to replicate, I highly recommend following royalhighstreet on Instagram. They find EXACT looks for way less than what the royals spent. Don’t believe me? Here’s a taste:

royalhighstreet on Instagram found a replica of Meghan’s Dior dress

Meghan’s Dior look was a smash hit and cost in the thousands, but the dress on the right is a fantastic look-a-like!

Whether you are taking inspiration or snagging the look for less, have fun with your style and make it your own!
