What Is Your Color Story?

This morning saw Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, in another chic look as she and Queen Elizabeth visited Cheshire together. Love it or hate it, there is a key to Meghan’s royal style that any of us an take and apply to our own wardrobes: Meghan lives in her color story.

I recently went on a trip and received so many compliments on my outfits. Given the brevity of the trip, I was asked how many suitcases I had to bring in order to pack that many looks. The trick was not that I paid my weight in baggage fees to bring a million options but that I strategically buy and packed within what I call my ‘color story’. Over the years, I have realized that certain colors, patterns, and cuts look best on me. When shopping, I gravitate to them naturally. Instead of fighting that, I embrace it. Putting together outfits becomes easier and easier when the parts are able to come together as a whole in a variety of ways. For example, I might acquire (over time) a white silk top, a navy blazer with gold buttons, a striped cardigan, a blush clutch, dark denim jeans, etc. These pieces may sound random, but when they all carry a common color or complimentary colors, you can put them together in any combination to create multiple looks. For me, the colors at the moment include blue, white, black, pink, and gray.  I buy those colors primarily in a few varying shades and intersperse accent colors as the seasons change to ensure that the pieces I am buying last through the test of time.

As you can start to see from the pictures below, Meghan Markle is able to do the same with the pieces she has in her wardrobe. The parts are complimentary and could be combined in numerous ways to create new looks.

If you don’t feel like you have a color story of your own, start by looking in your closet! Pull out some of your absolute favorite pieces and start to find a common thread between them. Organizing your closet by color can also help you to discern what you lean toward when you shop and assist you in cultivating your story. Above all, have fun with your wardrobe! Find what you love and allow it to show the world who you are!
